LINUX UO CLIENT HOWTO

DISCLAIMER: The Ultima Online Linux client is TOTALLY UNSUPPORTED!
It may work on your Linux installation, it may not. It may format your
root partition, mess up your sendmail configuration, or even become
sentient and kill your dog. The native Linux port is not a supported
product of Origin Systems, nor is running the Windows binary under WINE
(though that, too, may work). This incarnation of the client is not
a guarantee of future ports to other operating systems, or even future
incarnations of the client for Linux!

*phew* Glad that's over with. To get started, here are some of the
details of which you should probably be aware before you start trying
to get the Linux port running.

     * You must be fully patched up to the latest datafiles. That means,
before you do anything, you need to run the UO patcher in Windows!
Without the newest patches, the client will behave VERY strangely,
and will definitely not work. You probably need to do a full
     installation, too.

     * The Linux client does NOT like the Enlightenment window manager.
In fact, it locks it up.	I don't know why, and I haven't had
time to debug it.	Don't try to run under E (unless you know how
to fix the window manager -- or if you have a useful suggestion
about what's wrong with the client, e-mail me).

     * You must have a kernel built with support for ELF binaries.
If you don't know what this means, you probably already have it.

     * You must have a glibc-2.1 (or higher) system. If you don't know
what that means, get RedHat 6.0 or higher. I'm not endorsing
RedHat, that just happens to be the distribution I built on.

     * You need a video card and X server running16 bpp depth.	Rumor has
it some newer X servers can provide variable-depth displays to X
clients, but mine doesn't. If you can run the client in a 32-bit
X server, let me know how.

     * This is a binary distribution. There is no source. You must
have the proper support libraries, etc. and it may STILL not work
     (see the disclaimer).

Given all that, the following features STILL may (most likely WON'T)
not work:
     * Sound; there's native sound code in there somewhere, but I've
personally never played with it, and I've also never heard a peep out
of my sound card with UO running.	This MIGHT BE another late-night
project for me; or if you know what tweaks to make to get it to work,
let me know and I'll add it to this file.

     * UO's Messenger feature most definitely won't work.

     * Localization stuff. You may find a lot of Unicode stuff that
doesn't work right. You may find a lot of regular English text
stuff that doesn't work right, too.

So finally, have fun. Don't call me or e-mail me if it doesn't work
(although it might be cool to hear if it does). I'm not responsible for
this code (either in a good way or a bad one), the most I did is fix
some silly compiler errors and tweak one or two compiler-defines; so,
don't thank me, and please don't track me down. The client was written
in a fairly portable fashion by the original team; from time to time,
we break it; all I did was fix as much as I needed to.	I didn't find any
useful documentation on this either (which is why this README now exists)
so you may be able to get more stuff working than I have detailed here.
Once again, THIS IS TOTALLY UNSUPPORTED, I built it and made it available
only because I dig Linux, and I needed for my own development.	I don't
anticipate that it will do Bad Things to your computer (or your dog),
but it very well may.
