Wolves are a great danger to sheep and cattle, and consequently have been almost exterminated from cultivated areas. In general they fear humans, but in the deep wilderness wolves will sometimes waylay travelers, particularly when food is in short supply. It is hotly contested among animal tamers as to which variety of wolf is most difficult to tame the widespread grey wolf, the timber wolf of the forest, or the arctic white wolf.
