SPELL BOOK
Spell books are merely collections of spells. A blank spell book is easily bought, and — should you persevere in the pursuit of magic — you will fill it with spells over the course of your lifetime. And how does one acquire these spells, you ask? Well, in this enterprising age, many a merchant now offers spell scrolls for purchase. Still, scrolls can often be found in the old way, hidden throughout the realm by fellows in our art, left for the clever (or merely lucky) to unearth. Once you have acquired a spell scroll, you have two choices as to what to do with it. If you are capable of casting a spell of this Circle, then you can place the in your spell book, and cast it often as you like — provided you have the mana and reagents the spell requires. If you are not capable of casting a spell of the same Circle as the spell on your scroll (say you have found a rare spell of the Sixth Circle, but you are but a Second-Circle mage) you can cast the spell once — and only once — from the scroll itself, regardless of your skill, mana or the reagents you possess. For a spell scroll binds the etheric energy required to cast a spell to the scroll itself - the mana, reagents and so forth required by the spell have already been drawn together when the spell scroll was created. By using the scroll, you release the power of the spell. Scrolls are not the only items that can have magical power bound to them. In your travels throughout Britannia, you may indeed encounter enchanted weapons, armor, clothing and other objects capable of some magical effect. |
