By Cuthbert of Serpent's Hold Began this book as a guide to weapons and armor common in Britannia. Using what I learned as a boy, when I was training to be a soldier at Serpent's Hold, I wanted to give descriptions of the weapons and how they are used. I wanted to write a guide that would be useful to professionals like myself, but also to an average person traveling in the wild and monster-ridden areas of Britannia. However, when I thought about it, ordinary people don't carry weapons on them at all times, as professional fighters might. Yet they don't have time to arm up for a surprise attack. Instead, they use their everyday tools — pickaxes, pitchforks, and so forth — as brilliant defensive and offensive weapons. I began to question how useful a list of war instruments might be to anyone but a paladin, soldier or mercenary. As any traveler knows, the choice of weapons, armor and other tools comes down to a balance of usefulness and weight. Everything you pick up or put on weighs something, so items that have more than one use are best. And, even for settled people, the question of money comes up. Plate armor is the toughest around, but also expensive. Does a farmer really need plate armor, or would that that money be better spent on a leather shirt and a pitchfork that could be used for farming as well as fighting? So this guide lists common types of weapons, armor and tools for you to look at. Most of these can be bought or found by the average citizen, and a few can be made. |
